Pilfers

Pilfers

Pilfers formed in 1997 when singer Coolie Ranx decided to leave Third Wave pioneers The Toasters to start his own project. It was a good move -- Pilfers is one of the best Ska bands on the scene. The band's latest release, Chawalaleng (Mojo), is spectacular, as the band experiments with various styles (Dancehall, Punk) to create an album jam-packed with Ska/Rock/Pop gems. While more than aptly backed by the super-solid rhythm section (along with guitarist Nick Bacon and singer/trombonist Vinnie Nobile), it's Nobile and Ranx's vocal charm that puts the record over the top. The vocals have a soulful depth which, mixed with Ranx's masterful toasting style, is reminiscent of early English Beat. The vocal workouts make the record worth a listen on their own; the tight band simply seals the deal.At Hamilton Music Theatre on Friday with Fivesoul and Downgrade.
