CityBeat enthusiastically recommends that -- when it's an option -- live, original music is the best bet on any given night. But we're putting out the call that on New Year's Eve you may take an evening off and ... DANCE, DANCE, DANCE. If you must. We'll expect you back supporting local music on Jan. 1. A sure-fire "hot spot" this year will be the Main Street Entertainment District in Over-the-Rhine, which could really use some support right now after the riot-related slow-downs. Jump Café and Bar is hosting "A Classy, Sassy New Year," featuring music by DJ Casper. Chicago's Lady D will spin deep House at Lava Lounge, which is offering a package deal that includes dinner at Carol's next door. Chill dance venue Karma is hosting a two-tiered dance fest, with a costlier party downstairs and an upstairs fête that's slightly cheaper. If you want it meat-market style, there's always Bar Cincinnati and Have a Nice Day Café, who are taking the patriotic route this year HANDC will even have an "Osama pinata," harking back to the good ol' "Ayatollah Assaholla" days. Most of these events can get a little pricey, but many offer perks like free food and champagne toasts. Be sure to call ahead for prices or advance tickets (some clubs are expecting sell-outs). -- MIKE BREEN
FRIDAY 28
Someone's nuts are roasting on an open fire. It seems that it's not just rosy cheeks that have Santa red in the face. Kris Kringle might have some skeletons in his closet, and Dasher and Dancer and all the rest are promising to tell all in THE EIGHT REINDEER MONOLOGUES. The Queen City Off Broadway theater troupe has all the dirt in an extended run of their holiday show. 513-542-2776. -- BRANDON BRADY.
SATURDAY 29
With its themes of good over evil and forgiveness and love, the BOAR'S HEAD AND YULE LOG FESTIVAL is a particularly appropriate way to celebrate the New Year. The ceremony, originating in the 14th century as a pagan rite, was converted by Christians to celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ. But, in an interesting juxtaposition, it still features many pagan elements. Check it out -- celebrate friendship and peace. It's pretty cool. Saturday and Sunday at Christ Church Cathedral. 513-621-BOAR. -- FORREST MARSTON
SUNDAY 30
Director Peter Jackson tackles the first installment of his Lord of the Rings film trilogy, FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, with a fresh and creative force. It's an action blockbuster that exceeds all its over-hyped expectations. Jackson has made an action epic filled with engaging performances (Elijah Wood, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Ian McKellan), spectacular photography and imaginative use of digital effects. While most contemporary blockbusters dissolve into a disjointed series of effects sequences, Fellowship remains committed to telling a complete and humanistic story. Thanks to Jackson's intelligent and powerful moviemaking, Fellowship is the most enjoyable and notable blockbuster in years. -- STEVE RAMOS
MONDAY 31
Well, yeah, Christmas is over, but Jacob Marley's still haunting the Cincinnati Shakespeare Festival. His last crack at straightening out Scrooge happens New Year's Eve. Whether he succeeds or not, you might want to show up after Monday's performance for a modestly priced New Year's Eve party: $20 (not including your ticket for JACOB MARLEY'S CHRISTMAS CAROL) gets you drinks, hors d'oeuvres, dancing and prizes. Ring in the New Year with actors! Who needs resolutions? 513-381-2273. -- RICK PENDER
