Boss Tributes

BY MIKE BREEN

If you're a fan of Bruce Springsteen and local music, the next week or so should be heavenly. In conjunction with the Boss' upcoming release, The Rising (his first with the E Street Band in almost 20 years), there will be two tribute concerts to Bruce, featuring two fairly different batches of local artists.

· On Monday, Phil's Records in Fort Mitchell will start selling the new album at midnight. As a lead-up, various locals (from the rootsier end of the street) will take to the newly installed Phil's stage to play a song or two starting at 7:30 p.m. Artists slated to appear include Messerly & Ewing, Pike 27, Sean Rhiney (of Clabbergirl), Jake Speed, Ben Walz, The Trips, Doug Staab (Gravy 8), Chuck Wagon, Jeff Roberson (Len's Lounge), The Stapletons, Rob Ervin, Bob Burns (Big In Iowa), JD Riggs, Venus Mission, Johnny Schott, Dan Souder and Wussy, a relatively new band featuring the Ass Ponys' Chuck Cleaver alongside Mark Messerly and Lisa Miller. The night will also feature Springsteen giveaways, a silent auction of rarities (benefiting local charities) and an exhibit of Bruce memorabilia, presented by local fans.

· Indie and Rock bands will unite to play at the "Who's the Boss" tribute at Top Cat's on Aug. 3, starting at 9 p.m. The show, presented in conjunction with local label Tiberius Records and retailer Shake It Records, will feature two songs each from local groups Thistle, El Gigante, The Tigerlillies, Jackass, Covington, Benj Clarke and A Slice of Nice, Fizzgig, Bob Burns, Cameron Cocheron, Jeremy Pinell and The Sweet Impala.

Rumors, Lies and General Misunderstandings
· The annual free Newport Arts and Music Festival is back on Saturday and Sunday, featuring displays from both visual and performing artists from the area. On the musical side, Saturday's lineup (starting at 1:30 p.m.) includes Tracy Walker, Tropicoso, Chris Collier and the Warsaw Falcons. Sunday's music includes Raison d'Etre, Mike Wade, Greg Schaber and High Street, Graveblankets and The Mistics. Music starts at noon on Sunday.

· Local Surf instrumentalists the Maladroits will appear on the "Rockin' and Surfin' Show" on WAIF (88.3 FM) this Saturday at 6 p.m. The group performs live on Friday at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Norwood. Music starts at 7 p.m.

· Lance Ohio, the solo guise of Ass Ponys and Ruby Vileos guitarist Bill Alletzhauser, will perform live for the first time in two years on Friday at the Southgate House Parlour. Alletzhauser will be joined by Dave Gilligan for his performance. Cluck the Hen also performs; eclectic duo Me or the Moon headlines.

· Singer/songwriter Kid Valance has returned to Cincinnati, following some cross-country troubadoring. Valance says he plans to drop anchor in Cincinnati for the summer, his first extended stint here in four years. Valance will start a regular Friday night residency at Sitwell's Coffee House in Clifton this week. Valance plays each week at 9 p.m.

· Gritty local rockers Monkey Biscuit have decided to call it quits. The group -- who released the 12-track cassette-only Zoom on local Deary Me Records in 1996 -- say the split is amicable, and they don't completely rule out future performances together. For the "official statement" on the split, check out monkeybiscuit.com. Singer Rob Ervin will perform at the aforementioned Springsteen tribute on Monday at Phil's Records.

· Beta 17 (aka Edward Denton), the keyboardist for Freekbass, has announced he is leaving the band to pursue a production career. 17's last show with the group is Friday night at The Overflow in Downtown Cincinnati.
