UC makes the grade for poetry month

BY BRANDON BRADY Linking? Click Here!

Class is in session once again for NATIONAL POETRY MONTH. The University of Cincinnati opens the window on the festivities with the combination of AMY GERSTLER and DAVID LEHMAN. But this event is more a sweeping landscape that adds nuances to the traditional poetry reading. Granted, the two-day celebration kicks off on Thursday with the two delivering a poetry reading at 8 p.m. in Room 127 of McMicken Hall. Woven into their appearance is the unveiling of new paintings in the Elliston Poetry Room from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday. UC blends the colors of these two seemingly disparate events with a panel discussion titled "Poetry and Painting: Nostalgia for the Community" at 1 p.m. Friday, also held in the Elliston Poetry Room. You see, neither Gerstler nor Lehman is solely attributed as a poet. Gerstler more than just dabbles in art criticism, working with the Whitney Museum and penning a book on the painter, Darren Waterston: Limited Edition. Lehman, meanwhile, lends a critical eye to the words with his books, Signs of the Times: Deconstruction and the Fall of Paul de Man and The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets. This combination should make for a pretty picture, indeed. 513-556-1570. ...

Author LAUREL K. HAMILTON is staking her territory once again. (Yes, there are non-poetry events in April, too.) This time out, the writer, who has developed quite the cult following with her series, Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, has the long-standing heroine tracking down a supernatural serial killer in CERULEAN SINS, the 11th title in the series. Those familiar with Hamilton's work know she isn't a traditional horror writer, despite the fact that vampires and werewolves run amok in her tales. Hamilton crafts fully realized characters in intricately woven plots with traditional themes like love and betrayal prowling about. And, well, yeah, there's some action and bloodlust in the mix. C'mon! Whadya expect? She writes about creatures of the night! Hamilton will shine light on her dark shadows at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Borders in Springdale. 513-671-5852.
