· Ornette Coleman -- Free Jazz

Ornette has been a favorite of mine for years. He took music to another place that very few musicians have the balls to go to. Miles called him insane, and that's enough for me.

· Smif-n-Wessun -- Dah Shinin'

Grimy New York Jazz/voodoo Hip Hop. "Ever since the beast put his glock to my chin/Now I'm livin' with a grudge for the fuzz." See also: Jeru the Damaja, Heltah Skeltah.

· Squirrel Nut Zippers -- Perennial Favorites

It's a shame these guys got lumped in with the "Swing" fad a few years ago. In my opinion the most underrated band ever. Creepy roaring '20s-era gangster music. And some of the nicest people around.

· Gerry Mulligan -- The Complete Gerry Mulligan Meets Ben Webster Sessions

This is awesome because you get to hear Jazz musicians work out compositions and hear how a song progresses for them. If you want to learn how music should work and figure out how to break out of the standard Rock song format, this is the record for you.

· Public Enemy -- Fear of a Black Planet

Terminator X is the Phil Spector (minus the murder) of Hip Hop. He and P.E. changed the game for everybody, inside and outside of Hip Hop. They alerted a generation of white people to the hypocrisy of our government and made awareness hip.

THE SUNDRESSES' next show is June 7 at the Southgate House for the A.M. Holiday benefit for Enjoy the Arts.
