Here are a few programs to look out for in the upcoming week ...
THURSDAY 7:30 P.M. WUSA All-Star Game, ESPN2. From Cary, N.C., the country's pro outdoor women's soccer league stages its all-star game. For some reason, women's soccer is quite entertaining, and not because there's a chance Brandi Chastain might whip off her top.
FRIDAY 9 P.M. A&E's Live by Request, A&E. "B.B. King and Friends." The legendary blues master treats legions of fans to a live performance. Viewers can phone in or e-mail their song requests as B.B. King and friends perform at John Jay College in New York City. If you're not having trouble with your woman, watch it with her.
SATURDAY 7:30 P.M. Hands on History, The History Channel. "Surfboards." Ron Hazelton hits the beach as he follows the surfboard's evolution from the long wooden boards of ancient Hawaiian royalty to the modern polystyrene models of today. The surfboard, one of the only pieces of sporting equipment that is entirely handmade, has a history that is equal parts sport, music and lifestyle. It can also net you two girls for every boy.
SUNDAY 8 P.M. The Real Jason and the Argonauts, Discovery. The story of Jason and the Argonauts is a classic retold in many books and movies. Jason, a prince, attempts to claim his father's throne, which his uncle refuses to relinquish. In order to prove his righteousness, Jason embarks on a quest to claim the magical Golden Fleece. He holds contests of strength and skill and assembles a team of legendary heroes to help him on his journey. Together, they set sail in a ship called the Argo, have many adventures, and Jason returns to successfully claim the throne. This program reveals that groundbreaking new discoveries indicate that this story may be based on real events that took place over 3,000 years ago. Now that's reality TV.
SUNDAY 10 P.M. Monsters: Put to the Test, TLC. Monsters aren't real and yet the myth of monsters continues in the public's collective consciousness. From keeping early close to land to making children afraid of what's under the bed, monsters seem to exist in spite of logic. Maybe watch this one with the light on.
SUNDAY 10:30 P.M. Star Dates, E! This odd bit of reality fare returns. Some unsuspecting sole is set up on a date with a, er, um, once famous person. This evening it's Fred "Rerun" Berry (What's Happening). The results are interesting. Some folks have a good time; others can't wait to find the door. And that includes both the celebrity and the blind date.
TUESDAY MIDNIGHT The New Tom Green Show, MTV. America's favorite hoser comic returns to MTV with an hour-long talk show. Still wacky after all these years, no doubt.
TUESDAY 9 P.M. This Far by Faith: the African-American Religious Experience, PBS/Channel 48. The six-part series will examine the arrival of the early African slaves through the Civil War, reconstruction, Jim Crow, The Great Depression, the civil rights era and into the 21st century.
NEWS & NOTES: The Steve Harvey Show is out on DVD June 24. A recap of the shows best episodes, what really stands out is Harvey's likeable demeanor. Good summertime viewing. ... Speaking of DVDs, South Park Season 2 is also now available. Distill the fact that you have grade-schoolers cussing like Teamsters and you realize this is some of the best satire of the '90s. Rock on.
