Carissa Barnard

Working artist CARISSA BARNARD, co-creator and co-curator of SSNOVA's Massive series, works as gallery manager at Linda Schwartz Gallery and as production manager for Mark Fox. Her next project is the third in the series, Massive: Presence, opening Oct. 10. She describes five cars that inspire her.

Memory and nostalgia pervade my artwork, and I find the same things attract me to objects. Design from the 1950s and 1960s inspires me -- the simplicity in construction combined with its functional elegance are so perfectly matched. The color combinations and ornamentation are just intoxicating. Old cars have the same effect for me. I grew up watching my father dismantle everything we owned and fix it. Ever since I've been a secret gear-head. Some of my favorites classics:

Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible Coupe (1960) -- The first car I ever rode in, strapped to a car seat watching the road through rusted-out floorboards. Turquoise with a white top surrounded by chrome and a charcoal, gray and white interior.

Ford Falcon (1960) -- This car is reminiscent of my years in the Arizona desert. I think I fell in love with old cars in that arid land. Nothing rusts there and time stands still. And you have to love the "three on the tree" transmission.

Chevy Blazer 4X4 (1977) -- The Blazer was orange and white, just like an Orangesicle, with wood paneling, that rose to the height of a tank. I have fond memories of my first love and an enormous back seat.

VW Karmann-Ghia Cabriolet -- An embarrassing John Hughes reference haunts me to this day. I'm still on the hunt for one of my very own.

And I've always had a thing for Chevy Impalas from the 1960s.
