The week in education equality, book bargains and jovial jousts

THURSDAY 21
Interested in advocating equality in education and empowering young girls and grown women? Then visit the cultural awareness and networking event sponsored by AAUW CINCINNATI, INC., 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at The Artery in Newport. The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a national nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the equity and empowerment of women and girls. Although their group title suggests that this would be a strictly for-women, by-women organization, "Y" chromosomes are encouraged to participate. The cost of the event is $6. A portion of the proceeds goes to The Artery. To RSVP, call 513-665-6590. (See Events.) -- NICHELLE M. BOLDEN

FRIDAY 22
In time for the back-to-school frenzy, the Friends of the Public Library present the second annual END OF SUMMER WAREHOUSE SALE, Thursday through Sunday at the Cincinnati Public Library Warehouse, 8456 Vine St., Hartwell. The public is invited to browse through the collection of 100,000 books, CDs, cassettes and other assorted materials featured. And get this: Prices begin at 50 cents! Funds raised from this event enable the Friends to continue providing reading enrichment programs for children, as well as adding to the already plentiful source of resource materials found in the Library's collection. 513-369-6035. (See Literary.) -- NICHELLE M. BOLDEN

SATURDAY 23
Here's an offer that you might call "joust about enough," if you weren't worried that your friends who hate puns would pelt you with pieces of chain mail or a leftover lance. This weekend kicks off the 14th annual OHIO RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL, and if you've grabbed the right coupons from a participating gas station or fast food joint, you can score two tickets for the price of one. The festival is not all fun and games: The jousting is deadly serious, and it's not hard to imagine someone getting skewered as the horses and knights run at one another, full tilt. If you prefer tamer distractions, there are 130 arts and crafts shops, and more food than you can shake a "giant turkey legge" at. 513-897-7000. (See Events.) -- RICK PENDER
