Minimum Gauge: Music News, Tid-Bits and Other Morsels

Who can walk the line as the Man in Black?

Johnny Cash

Hot
Hollywood Cash

A new film about the life of Johnny Cash is reportedly scheduled to begin shooting in June. The movie, titled Walk the Line, will star Joaquin Phoenix as Cash (OK, that works) and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash (what the ... ?).

GLAAD Has Love/Hate Relationship with 50

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation says they appreciate Rap star 50 Cent's honesty. Responding to an interview with Playboy (they read it for the articles), in which Mr. Cent says he doesn't like "faggots" and preferred to not have gay people around him, GLAAD issued an even-tempered statement praising the rapper for his candor, saying that talking about the issues will open dialog. "We know that confronting homophobia can indeed be uncomfortable," the statement said. "But honesty is always the first step in overcoming the desire to judge those who are different than us and in overcoming prejudice."

Warm
R.I.P.

J.J. Jackson, the only original male MTV VJ who never gave off the impression that he had been on the receiving end of endless schoolyard beatings as a child, died after suffering a heart attack recently. The longtime DJ was 62. Don't worry J.J., in heaven there's no more Laura Branigan videos.

R. You Kidding Me?

As much as we've made fun of R. Kelly's court problems (who doesn't love a good pee joke?), we thought we should tell you, in the interest of fairness, that the child pornography charges against the R&B crooner have been dropped. A judge recently ruled that detectives had illegally seized photos of the singer having, um, "creative" sex with an underage girl, and therefore the pics could not be used in the case against him. Kelly is still due in court on other charges April 2.

Cold
Burning Down the "House"

A European label has released an unauthorized, repackaged collection of "hits" by rockers Great White. But the band's biggest problem with the release isn't its lack of a stamp of approval, but rather its title, Burning House of Love (in their defense, the band did cover the X song of the same name on a 2002 release). Great White, of course, were the band playing and shooting off pyrotechnics when a Rhode Island night club went up in flames, killing nearly 100 concert-goers. The group is seeking to have the distribution of the release stopped.

MiniGauge Hall of Famer Courtney Love Does It Again

Courtney Love turned the crazy knob up yet another couple of notches (hell, she ripped the knob off a couple of years ago) with an utterly cringe-inducing appearance on David Letterman's show that puts her in the same league as other all-time great Letterman meltdowns like Crispin Glover and Farrah Fawcett (her rambling Howard Stern appearance was equally priceless). What to do to celebrate such an eventful promotional appearance? Why, get arrested of course. Love was nabbed by cops after allegedly hurling a microphone stand and striking a man with it during an NYC club date after the Late Show fracas. A day later, she was again arrested, this time for injuring a photographer during a crowd-surfing outburst. Message to Courtney: You are not, nor will you ever be Frances Farmer.
