Historically, the words "dance" and "competition" would rarely appear in the same sentence, but nowadays the American-as-apple-pie competitive ideal permeates areas well outside the sports arena. You've seen So You Think You Can Dance? and Dancing With the Stars, and now you can witness some fine ballroom dancing live at the ninth annual CINCINNATI DANCESPORT COMPETITION at the Holiday Inn Resort (near the airport in Erlanger). DanceSport takes the floor Thursday evening through Saturday, featuring rhythm dances (such as Mambo, Cha-Cha, Hustle, Swing) and smooth dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango) that are separated into American and International Style categories. Judging by the dancers' dedication displayed at previous competitions, the event promises to be as competitive as it is elegant. The elaborate (some might say over-the-top) costumes dazzle as couples swirl, strut, shimmy and step their way, each moving as if they own the place.
Dig freestyle expression? You should get a kick out of SCRIBBLE JAM. For the past 10 years, the annual four-day fest has celebrated all aspects of Hip Hop culture (dance, graffiti art, MCing, DJing and more). Dance-wise, it's a hotbed of raw talent for break-dancers. Head to Annie's (4343 Kellogg Ave., Columbia-Tusculum) Saturday for a fierce multi-heat competition featuring local groups as well as several big-city crews. See who gets served and who will victoriously head to sunny San Diego for the national break-dance competition finals. Aspiring break-dancers can strut their stuff at Burnet Woods Sunday afternoon for a free-for-all poppin', lockin', spinnin' good time. Sweatbands recommended. Details at scribblejam.net. ...
It's not dance, but it's a full-blown locomotive skirmish: CINCINNATI ROLLERGIRLS are rarin' to take off Sunday at Castle Skateland (980 Loveland-Madeira Road, Loveland). Team names like Dames of Destruction and The Bloody Sundaes smack of aggressively ruthless moves on four wheels (they wear old-school quad skates, not inline ones). Will the cutthroat competition spark any girl fights? Come see -- and egg them on in this, their inaugural battle. Info: cincinnatirollergirls.com.
