Water is important. I haven’t checked Wikipedia, but I’m pretty sure every living thing needs it to survive. So does the Grand Canyon. I never been to this so-called “wonder of the world,” but after experiencing the Cincinnati Museum Center’s latest Omnimax extravaganza, Grand Canyon Adventure, I feel like I have. Greg MacGillivray’s documentary follows anthropologist/author Wade Davis and longtime environmentalist Robert Kennedy Jr. (and each of their college-age daughters) on a trip down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon. The duo has two goals: to document how the canyon continues to evolve and be negatively impacted by various forces like global warming and to experience the power of nature with their daughters. MacGillivray puts us down in the water with them, making the most of the canyon’s visual grandeur and immense presence. And while the film’s earnest narrative comes off as truncated in this format (45 minutes just isn’t sufficient to cover such a complex environmental issue), its immersive images are more than enough to convey its vital message.
