Art: In Three Days at the Art Academy

By Matt Morris
. . . . . . .

“I would send you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.” So said Nora Ephron by way of Tom Hanks in her screenplay for the seminal romantic comedy You’ve Got Mail. Early autumn always recalls this line and thoughts of school starting. And nowhere in town is all the anticipation and nervous energy of a new academic year better presented right now than in the Art Academy of Cincinnati’s student-run Chidlaw Gallery. In Three Days is in its final week. The draw here is that many of the featured artists are entering their final year and the kind of work they are making now will no doubt be going through major transformation during the next eight months. Highlights include Steve Adkins’ elegant, eroded monument in plaster and glass and Patricia Murphy’s two eloquently erroneous collages of catchall compositions of cut paper, glitter, pompoms and painting. Amy Scarpello’s science-experiment-sculpture Rock seems meant to collect sugar crystals on a string suspended in a liquid filled jar. Maybe it hasn’t totally worked yet, but in the meantime it is a sweet little still life. Continues 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily through Sept. 18.
