Aisle Gallery's space is divided up right now for two solo projects, one by Kate Kern and the other featuring Jim Wainscott, who continues his project of circular, highly layered paintings of his surrounding environment.
Kern’s Small World is populated with works that are not quite “book arts” as much as “book-aware” art. The grandly-scaled title piece is constructed from toner transfers onto card catalogue cards. Two series run down the hallway space. In one, Kern’s ink drawings of her home and yard are interrupted by mysteriously unexplained monsters, such as the cluster of alien eyeballs hanging down from above a banister.
Kern’s beautifully rendered exhibition deals a deft blow of sinister, open-ended storytelling.
Aisle is located in the West End at 424 Findlay St. on the third floor. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and by appointment by calling 513-241-3403. Exhibition continues through July 2, with an artist talk at 1 p.m. June 26.
