In the meantime, there’s plenty of centuries-old (and newer) music coming this fall, starting with the world-renowned Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in its final season with Maestro Paavo Jarvi. On Sept. 24-26, the CSO welcomes guest conductor John Morris Russell and Broadway dynamo Idina Menzel (star of TV’s Glee and Tony-winner as Elphaba in Wicked). On Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, Maestro Jarvi conducts the CSO for the legendary soprano Kathleen Battle in a program of Strauss (including “Thus Spake Zarathustra”) and Rossini.
Oct. 8-9 and Nov. 5-6 will feature the CSO presenting the first two weekends of a five-weekend schedule covering the complete cycle of Beethoven piano concertos. Oct. 8-9 will feature guest conductor James Gaffigan and pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa and works by Beethoven, Schubert and Verdi, plus the Cincinnati premiere of a commission by Daniel Bernard Roumain (the Haitian composer better known as DBR, a frequent collaborator with Lady Gaga). The Nov. 5-6 program features conductor Thomas Dausgaard and pianist Barry Douglas translating Beethoven, Bach and Sibelius.

The Chamber Music Network of Greater Cincinnati will present its fifth annual Chamber Palooza at the Cincinnati Art Museum Sept. 11 from noon-4 p.m. Guests include the Queen City Bronze, the Cincinnati Klezmer Project and the Wade Brothers Piano Duo, among a wide variety of other instrumentalists and vocalists; a number of family friendly activities are scheduled as well.
