In the meantime, there’s plenty of centuries-old (and newer) music coming this fall, starting with the world-renowned Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, in its final season with Maestro Paavo Jarvi. On Sept. 24-26, the CSO welcomes guest conductor John Morris Russell and Broadway dynamo Idina Menzel (star of TV’s Glee and Tony-winner as Elphaba in Wicked). On Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, Maestro Jarvi conducts the CSO for the legendary soprano Kathleen Battle in a program of Strauss (including “Thus Spake Zarathustra”) and Rossini.
Oct. 8-9 and Nov. 5-6 will feature the CSO presenting the first two weekends of a five-weekend schedule covering the complete cycle of Beethoven piano concertos. Oct. 8-9 will feature guest conductor James Gaffigan and pianist Mihaela Ursuleasa and works by Beethoven, Schubert and Verdi, plus the Cincinnati premiere of a commission by Daniel Bernard Roumain (the Haitian composer better known as DBR, a frequent collaborator with Lady Gaga). The Nov. 5-6 program features conductor Thomas Dausgaard and pianist Barry Douglas translating Beethoven, Bach and Sibelius.

The Linton Chamber Music Series opens its season on Oct. 17-18 with the Kalichstein/Laredo/Robinson Trio and the Miami String Quartet for a Haydn/Zwilich/Schumann program. The series continues with a Martinu/Schulhoff/Brahms program on Nov. 14-15 and a Beethoven/Dvorak/Shostakovich program on Dec. 5-6. The Chamber Music Network of Greater Cincinnati will present its fifth annual Chamber Palooza at the Cincinnati Art Museum Sept. 11 from noon-4 p.m. Guests include the Queen City Bronze, the Cincinnati Klezmer Project and the Wade Brothers Piano Duo, among a wide variety of other instrumentalists and vocalists; a number of family friendly activities are scheduled as well.
