Audiences should be forgiven for thinking that Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) and his adventure on the island of Liliput has anything to do with Jonathan Swift’s classic, because all Black has done is somehow convince director Rob Letterman (Monsters vs. Aliens) to shoot Travels as if it were a craptastic 3-D spectacle from Jeff Portnoy, Black’s pandering character from Tropic Thunder.
It’s too bad neither of them let co-stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Billy Connelly and Amanda Peet in on the gag, because then maybe they would have surrendered to the idea that this was nothing more than a paycheck gig.
Black and the story hit us
over the head at every turn, as if we’re too think to get the
point. But, honestly, if you find yourself in the theater for this
one, maybe you deserve to watch Black piss away whatever goodwill
he’s ever earned. Grade: D-
