OK, you’ve seen Wicked umpteen times and learned the songs from Godspell, so you’re pretty familiar with musicals by Stephen Schwartz. But I bet there’s one you haven’t checked off your list yet. The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati this week presents My Son Pinocchio Jr., a lighthearted spin on the classic story of the wooden puppet brought to life as a boy and keeps getting into scrapes because he doesn’t tell the truth. Schwartz added a compelling score of original songs to the beloved classics from the original Disney animated feature — “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “I’ve Got No Strings.” All the familiar and unforgettable characters come to life onstage, including Gepetto, the Blue Fairy, the villainous Stromboli and Professore Buonragazzo. In addition to school performances this week at the Taft Theatre downtown, you can take kids you know to public performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and perhaps give them their first taste of live theater.
