Rewind to high school. You and your friends are sitting
in the car in the parking lot outside of Bogart’s, waiting for Battle
of the Bands to start. Two water bottles are being passed around the
car, one halfway full of vodka that your friend took from his parents’
house, the other full of orange juice. While the bottles are being
passed in attempt to good buzz going before seeing your friend’s band,
another friend is on the lookout to make sure the coast is clear.
Now,
fast-forward to 2013 — CityBeat’s New Music Showcase. The bands
are better and you can buy your own alcohol. Presented by Coors Light,
the 2013 New Music Showcase event features six of Greater Cincinnati’s
best local bands as they battle it out for audience votes, determining
who will be crowned New Artist of the Year at the 16th annual Cincinnati
Entertainment Awards show the following week. The bands include Jeremy
Pinnell and the 55’s, DAAP Girls, Ohio Knife, The Natives, Public and
Heavy Hinges. $7 in advance; $10 day of show. Supporting a worthy cause,
$2 from each ticket will be donated to the Greater Cincinnati Music
Heritage Foundation. 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18. Bogart’s, 2621 Vine St., Corryville.
