If Medeski, Martin & Wood's current live show is reflective of their current album, The Dropper, then it's well-recommended that you go into this with a very open mind, especially if you're a fan of the band as groovy Jazz "jam band." That said, The Dropper is an enthralling piece of art, the group's best work yet.
Shifting from mind-expanding Fusion forays to electronica-worthy ambience to experimental jaunts that would scare the shit out of those Radiohead guys, Dropper is a dazzling testament to musical freedom. Their avant-garde approach to rhythm and composing puts them in the "unclassifiable" bin. And that's a great thing in MMW's case.
At Bogart's on Thursday.
