Sonic Youth -- Sister
The screaming feedback.
The elbowed guitars. The tight drumming. The pounding bass guitar. The brash vocals. The detestation in the lyrics. The utter disregard of semblance. The stunning artwork. The do-it-yourself ethic. The swellings of sound. This was a new feeling. I knew that I had to write songs. I knew that I had to create. This was the future. This was my future. Do it yourself? Maybe. Do it with friends? Definitely. The lessons of Sonic Youth's
Sister have proven to be invaluable to me, as well as music in general. While these guys were changing music forever, they were doing it on their own terms. This is the inspiration that drives me to write songs. Fuck trying to fit into a certain niche. Fuck kissing ass in a feeble attempt to land gigs. Fuck trying to become the next Beatles. Music is about creation. Music is about doing something that has never been done before. Let the music stand on its own.
