In Cincinnati, the oscillation of gay culture keeps the community on its toes for several reasons. Cincinnati is not a large city. It only lends to reason that as a result of a smaller population, the gay community itself is also small and more sensitive to anomalies in the social fabric. When gay bars and gay businesses close, it’s a big deal. And there have been some big deals this year.

Seelbach, 31, is making his first run for Cincinnati City Council this fall after having worked on several political campaigns for candidates and issues. A Democrat, he is an openly gay man who lives in Over-the-Rhine with his partner, Craig. Although another gay person, conservative John Schlagetter, ran twice unsuccessfully for City Council in 2001 and 2003 as a Charterite, Schlagetter never trumpeted his orientation. By comparison, Seelbach thinks it’s important that he be honest and forthcoming about his personal life when seeking public support.

To raise awareness of the 30-year anniversary of the CDC's first-recorded AIDS case, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced this year that June 27 will be National HIV/AIDS Testing Day. Unfortunately, some local AIDS organizations will miss out on the opportunity to raise awareness, as the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) earlier this year cut funding to Cincinnati’s oldest HIV/AIDS nonprofit organization, Stop AIDS. The agency provided case management, education and testing in the region for more than 28 years.
