When the Soviet Union launched their 1948 blockade of West Berlin, the United States began the Berlin Airlift to bring supplies to West Berlin. Halvorsen launched his own initiative within the Airlift — dropping miniature parachutes with candy to German children in what was later known as Operation Little Vittles. Halvorsen spoke at Northern Kentucky University on Oct. 14.
