Westwood Group Strongarms Summit
When CityBeat heard the Westwood Civic Association was planning a so-called “West Side Summit,” the group's leader responded that he was seeking input from various West Side neighborhood groups and that they could help set the agenda.
A recent e-mail exchange between WCA President John Sess and a Community Press reporter, however, in which Sess attempts to get publicity for the event, paints a somewhat different picture about its purpose.

West Side Summit Planned
A summit of neighborhood leaders from Cincinnati's West Side is being planned by the Westwood Civic Association (WCA).
The association is inviting all West Side neighborhood groups, not just those from its home base of Westwood, and says it's seeking input on topics that will be discussed.

Businesses Rally Against Hate Crime
Six gay-oriented taverns in Covington are teaming up Saturday for a “Zero Tolerance for Hate Crimes” event, in response to a recent violent attack on four people at a nearby gas station.
The event, which begins at 9 p.m., involves a gathering at the corner of Pike and Main streets in a show of strength and unity. Businesses participating are Blue Bar, Bar Monet, Yadda Club, Leapin' Lizard Gallery, 701 Bar and Rosie's Tavern.

Brunner Defends Bilingual Ballots
Amid increasing right-wing bellowing about illegal immigrants, Ohio's top elections official is defending the practice of providing bilingual ballots.
Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has released a video, “Bilingual Ballots: A Human Perspective,” that interviews people of Puerto Rican descent in Cuyahoga County.

Women's Caucus to Question Candidates
The public is invited to attend and help question local candidates at the annual endorsement meeting of the Cincinnati Women's Political Caucus 7-9:30 p.m. June 24 at First Unitarian Church, 536 Linton St., Avondale.
Although the public may attend, only caucus members will be allowed to vote on endorsements after the question and answer session.

Time to Run It Up the Flagpole...
I’m one of those rare liberals who live in southwest Warren County, in a suburb that’s almost certainly one of Sarah Palin’s "pro-America" areas of the country. On primary election day, when I announced my party affiliation, everyone looked up and laughed.
Yet, shockingly, few American flags fly in my neighborhood on a daily basis. And not many find their way outside on holidays like Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day or Independence Day. Well, this Monday is Flag Day, another prime opportunity for everyone across the political spectrum to express their passion for America’s ideals by flying the old Red, White and Blue.

Poor People's March Arrives Here
About 100 people who are marching from New Orleans to Detroit to call attention to the problem of poverty in the United States stopped in Cincinnati this afternoon.
Marchers in the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign arrived at the Purple People Bridge, then proceeded to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center where they discussed the issue of economic slavery in America.

They've Got Gumption
For the first time in its history, the Charter Committee has selected three winners for its Gumption Award. All three people were involved in defeating Issue 9 — which Charter describes as the “anti-progress charter amendment" — in last fall’s election.
This year’s winners are Bobby Maly, Rob Richardson and Joe Sprengard, all of whom were the founders of Cincinnatians for Progress (CFP). The group was formed last year to campaign against Issue 9.

'SistaHood' Returns to WAIF
Ending a seven-month suspension from the air, The SistaHood Show is returning to its weekly berth at WAIF (88.3 FM) beginning today.
