Jens Jenson: From Rookwood to Modernism
Saturday October 08
Jens Jenson, Danish-born
artist who worked in Cincinnati at Rookwood Pottery, made art of
anything he pleased, from a lamp shade to stones he found on walks. Jens Jenson: From Rookwood to Modernism
includes not only his strong, modernist paintings but also wooden
furniture decorated by hand for his own household, painted stones that
have become art in themselves, the decidedly individual Rookwood pottery
he designed and, yes, a lamp shade painted in colors and shapes that
echo his paintings. A row of miscellaneous oddments touched up by the
artist's hand lines the front window. Part of the pleasure of the show
is the sense of overflowing creativity Jenson evinced in daily life. In
the 1930s, as work at Rookwood slackened, he spent more and more time on
the paintings that dominate this show, seriously avant-garde work in
this place at that time.
