What should I be doing instead of this?

Naked Tchopstix (Review)

Asian chain offers sushi, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Southeast Asian cuisine

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I’m sure we’ve all heard that phrase applied to any number of situations, but I had to say it to myself when I learned I was to review a new restaurant named Naked Tchopstix. The name is just a bit twee and made me wonder how the food would be. I needn’t have worried — the food is absolutely amazing.

It seems like in the past, Cincinnati had a reputation for being the kind of place you could move away from for a decade knowing that when you returned, the gas station, grocery store and drinking establishments would be there waiting for you, exactly as you left them.

Taft Theatre Announces New 'Ballroom'

Since remodeling and reopening last year, downtown’s Taft Theatre already was programming a more adventurous concert lineup than usual. This year, the venue has already announced shows by more “mid-level” groups like Trampled By Turtles and JJ Grey & Mofro, both cult faves and Southgate alumni.

'Prince of Sin City' is the long-awaited historically based novel by local literature professor, writer, musician and poet Gary Walton. Set largely in the gambling heyday of Newport, the book provides an engaging view into the area's mysterious, sometimes seedy past.

La Mexicana (Review)

Newport classic makes up for nondescript decor with delicious authenticity

I generally judge the authenticity of a Mexican restaurant not by decor or signage but by salsa and mole sauce. So when we got the salsa — a nice mix of tomatillos and jalapenos with a lovely cilantro aftertaste — I was pretty happy. La Mexicana indeed is one of the most authentic Mexican restaurants in the area.

Newport Pizza Company (Lunch Review)

Sometimes after a night of imbibing several adult beverages all you want to do is spend the afternoon at the nearest pizza joint relaxing and watching some other people watch sports. So on a recent Saturday, my dining partner and I hit up the Newport Pizza Company to do just that. It turned out to be a great place.

Rio Grande (Review)

Newport mainstay offers delicious fajitas and unique ambiance

Tucked into an unassuming strip mall in Newport is one of the most popular restaurants in the area, Rio Grande. "It's got the best margaritas," a barista at one of my favorite coffee houses told me one day. "It's kind of a dive, but the food is so good. And it's cheap.”

Buy Local, Eat Better

NuVo restaurant utilizes local food to keep your money in the local economy

1 Comment · Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Chef Michael Peterson of NuVo Modern American Cuisine in Newport depends on other small local businesses. They do the things he can't, and working with them moves the money we spend eating at NuVo into their pockets and hopefully keeps rotating through local wallets. Plus, Peterson says, dealing with local farms and small vendors is relational instead of an anonymous transaction.

The Newport Syndicate (Review)

A Piano? Fuhgeddaboutit! Restaurant needs more polish.

After watching all eight seasons of the Sopranos and Godfather I, II and III, I know a little bit about syndicates. They who help you out in a jam and then expect to be repaid. The first few times they send an enforcer, they aren’t there to kill you — they’re there to warn you.
