Ohio Gov. John Kasich has been at odds with his own party during the past week over a battle for education reform. On May 8, Republicans in the Ohio Senate pushed to slow down Kasich’s reforms, which would call for tougher reading standards and report-card rating systems in Ohio schools and districts.   

Let's hope you won’t be too busy during December preparing for and celebrating the various holidays to get to area museums and galleries for their art exhibits. There are quite a few good ones. Here are my recommendations, based either on seeing them or being familiar with the artists/subject matter.  

Ann Hamilton's current exhibition at Carl Solway Gallery, titled 'reading,' uses prints, sculptural objects and video to represent reading as a creative rather than a passive act. This exhibition is not one of the multimedia installations for which Hamilton is internationally famous but nonetheless features some of the artist's recurring themes.  

Jacob Baynham makes an important observation in “Blowing Their Tops” (issue of Nov. 11) that nothing but Russian Olive has grown back on an eastern Kentucky mountain that was mined and reclaimed 20 years ago.  

Notions of how a voice achieves agency in the world. Its linguistic vitality is incredible. All the things that bring pleasure in poetry are there the texture of a particular voice, complex prosody, anaphor, sophisticated rhyme schemes and explosive punning.
