Traditionally, as a woman, people expect you/me to make a lot of things: homes, babies, CityBeat Women’s Issues, etc. Thankfully, no one required me to get pregnant during the making of this special section. I probably would have said no. But since it’s already 2009, I figured we’ve been fighting for equality long enough that some of the social stigma has worn off of this Suzy Homemaker persona. Instead of revolting against her, we could probably recognize her, maybe even embrace her — but only if she said it was OK. Otherwise it’s sexual harrassment.  

It’s been a slow start with an unexpected delay, but James Crump, the new curator of photography at the Cincinnati Art Museum (CAM), has his first show, Garry Winogrand: Women Are Beautiful, opening soon. The exhibition is an attempt to champion the reputation of a post-World War II American “street-life” photographer whose legacy has slipped somewhat while other museums have had recent big shows devoted to such contemporaries as Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank, William Eggleston and Diane Arbus.  

To seek shelter is to look for protection. To offer shelter is to provide protection, though in the case of the YWCA Battered Women's Shelter it also means to provide escape services that help women move into a new life away from a violent situation.   

Eight weeks ago Jin (not her real name) escaped a violent relationship with a Korean man, and she now has thoughts of suicide because of the shame and guilt she feels.

For Kendall Fisher, adjusting to her first month as Women Helping Women’s executive director felt like deja vu. She’d been the organization’s associate director from 1996 to 2001, and coming back this July was “like a homecoming,” she says. Fisher supports a women’s advocacy agency for victims and survivors of violent crimes and stalk ing.
