The journey of Peter Pan (newcomer Levi Miller) begins when he’s left on the steps of an orphanage with a panpipe necklace — a keepsake that will define his legacy. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) injects jaded wonders and dark magic into his version of Neverland, while Jason Fuchs’ script pilfers and plunders from a treasure trove of the “chosen one” source materials, most obviously the Star Wars mythos — casting young Pan as a Luke Skywalker alongside a charismatic rogue named Hook (Garrett Hedlund) and a feisty Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara) standing in for Han Solo and Princess Leia — but Pan never quite feels like this is what creator J.M. Barrie had in mind for his epic character. (Opens wide Friday) (PG) Grade: C+
