Besides offering a selection of vinyl, guitars and various music equipment and services (like repairs and lessons), the new Herzog Music (at 811 Race St., in the ground-floor storefront of the downtown building that once housed the historic E.T. Herzog Recording Company studio) has been presenting a variety of free, all-ages events.
Among the increasing number of in-store performances, workshops and presentations are cool happenings like this Saturday’s Toddler Jam, a recurring, well-attended morning-time gathering for tots hosted by The Tillers’ Sean Geil and his son Auggie. The rest of November's events at Herzog include a clinic/hangout for bassists (presented in conjunction with TalkBass.com) on Nov. 25 and a clinic on guitar pedals and effects presented by musician Fritz Pape on Nov. 30.
In December, Herzog hosts a pair of intriguing ticketed events. The Herzog Harmony Series features a songwriting clinic/discussion with Erika Wennerstrom, frontperson of the acclaimed Dayton/Cincinnati-born, Austin, Texas-based Heartless Bastards. Wennerstrom will discuss her writing process and professional experiences, and offer advice on both. (Advanced tickets are available now through cincyticket.com.)
On Dec. 22, the Herzog Harmony Series welcomes local musicians Arlo McKinley, Sylvia Mitchell, Kelly Thomas, Moriah Haven, Tyler Lockard and Sarah Davis (plus host Edwin Vardiman) for a celebration of their own Spirits of Hank recording sessions in 2012, during which they recorded the eight songs American music icon Hank Williams cut at the original Herzog studio. It is also the 69th (nice) anniversary of Williams' first session at Herzog. (Read about that and other pivotal sessions here.) McKinley and Co. will perform those eight songs and have a special re-issue of their original recordings of them available at the event. Admission is $10, with proceeds going to the Cincinnati USA Music Heritage Foundation (which is also the beneficiary of this Sunday's 20th-annual Cincinnati Entertainment Awards).
