It’s been a weird awards season for the Oscars: After past homophobic tweets from scheduled host Kevin Hart surfaced, the title of emcee went to — as Mitski might sing — nobody. And, honestly, it was better off that way. Then the awards played a game of retraction when they announced a new category for best popular picture but quickly took it away. And when they received backlash for pushing four awards to commercial breaks, they put them back in place.

But the show must go on. And it did — with a couple of former Cincinnati residents getting big love.

Cincinnati-born Regina King won for Best Supporting Actress for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk. (Read more about the film here.) And Hannah Beachler of Centerville, Ohio made history as the first African American to win for production design. And deservedly so: She helped create the vibrant, afrofuturistic world of Black Panther’s Wakanda. (Read our film critic’s review here.) Also making history on the Black Panther team was Ruth E. Carter, who took home an Oscar for costume design and was also the first black woman to win in that category.

Beachler — who studied at the University of Cincinnati in the ’90s and earned a bachelor’s degree in motion pictures from Wright State — previously worked on major productions like 2016’s Best Picture Moonlight, Beyoncé's visually stunning Lemonade video album and the Cincinnati-shot film Miles Ahead.
