Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) aim to save 3-D effects and Christmas in their latest adventure, but first they’ve got to unite after drifting apart. Cho (as one of the stalwart founding crew members of the all-new Starship Enterprise) and Penn (fresh off his stint in the Obama administration) have lost their stoner bromantic mojo, and the movie stumbles mightily.

The two lovable losers truly look lost. Harold has become part of the 1 percent, although he’s faced with holidays guests (Robert Rodriguez favorite Danny Trejo as his father-in-law) who offer hints of the 99 percent waiting outside the gates, while Kumar has become a full-on stoner, one who no longer enjoys the freewheeling highs of yore or the good life he found with his long-lost love.

Rebound best buds — Todd (Thomas Lennon) and his newborn babe (who has a nose for any and every drug in the frame) for Harold and Adrian (Amir Blumenfeld), Kumar’s young dumb and dumber stoner neighbor — occupy the bromantic spots in their lives, but with a little help from the jolly fat man, Neil Patrick Harris and a crazed midnight run to replace a torched Christmas tree, Harold and Kumar find themselves again, just in time to make the high holidays a season worth its packaged weight.
