After 17 years underground, billions of Brood X cicadas have emerged in Ohio and surrounding states. These chirping, red-eyed insects truly are everywhere now — including at LEGOLAND Discovery Center in Columbus, where a swarm has overtaken MINILAND.

Master Model Builder Maxx Davidson has created more than 50 LEGO cicadas and placed them all over mini models of landmarks from Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland. Cicadas are storming the Ohio Statehouse, scaling skyscrapers and even riding on top of city buses.

Using 22 different LEGO bricks for each bug (including bucket handles for legs), LEGOLAND says this brood will only continue to grow.

“Something that only happens every 17 years is a pretty big occasion, so I couldn’t wait to translate my love of biology into a LEGO creation and share it with our guests," Davidson tells CityBeat

MINILAND is located within LEGOLAND Discovery Center and uses more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks to recreate tiny versions of favorite sites from around Ohio, including Carew Tower, the Ohio State University football stadium and Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

“MINILAND Ohio is a reflection of our state so it made sense that our MINILAND attraction would mirror this fun event that’s impacting where we live,” says Davidson.

The kid-friendly LEGOLAND Discovery Center is geared toward those ages 3-10 (and their parents) and features a 4D cinema, rides, costumed characters, a factory tour, workshops and more.
