Cincinnati Jewish arts organization ish is hosting an immersive eco-art fashion experience a the Mockbee this August.
Trashion features teen-designed clothing that will “celebrate creative fashion design and promote waste reduction and sustainability,” per a release from ish.
The event, described as “Hunger Games meet Harry Potter’s Yule Ball on Project Runway,” is being coordinated by the Cincinnati Jewish Teen Initiative at ish. This initiative focuses on teenagers and develops “inclusive, creative, and supportive experiences in partnership with Jewish community.”
The theme of this show is described by ish as “love and destruction in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.” Organizers say the event will be hosted in the “spirit of vogue balls in drag culture.” Those participating will create their own “house” developing a general theme for the designs created by their group.
These upcycled costumes can be worked on now, as studio hours are currently open. ish will provide some things including sewing machines, glue and materials.
Contestants will also be able to get advice from local artists and designers at the free workshops held by ish on Thursday, Aug. 4 and Saturdays July 23 and 30.
Trashion will be held Aug. 11 from 8-11 p.m. teenagers aged 15-19 are invited to participate in the costume contest. The event is free and will feature music, circus performers, a silent disco along with the fashion show.
Each registered house has the opportunity to win a $200 restaurant gift card if they win. There will be a free party bus transporting participants from the Jewish Community Center in Amberly Village.
