Cincinnati Reds second baseman Jonathan India already has a cabinet full of hardware recognizing his outstanding 2021 season. But now he's landed the big, big one.
Monday night, the Baseball Writers' Association of America announced that India is the 2021 Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year for Major League Baseball's National League. Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena earned the title for the American League.
India's crowning was nearly unanimous, BBWAA says, with the young infielder receiving 29 of 30 first-place votes from esteemed baseball writers throughout the country. The Association adds that India is only the eighth Reds player and the seventh National League second baseman to win the honor.
For the National League Rookie title, India competed against Dylan Carlson of the St. Louis Cardinals and Trevor Rogers of the Florida Marlins.
Here's how BBWAA says winners were selected:
Ballots, submitted prior to postseason play, were cast by two writers representing each league city. They are tabulated on a system that awards five points for first place, three points for second place, one point for third place.
Surrounded by family, India learned the news from none other than Reds legend Johnny Bench.
Naturally, the Reds are all about India's win.
But honestly, India deserves it. Look at those stats!
The Reds are celebrating India's latest honor with a new bobblehead. India's likeness will only be available with Pick-6 ticket plans for the Reds' 2022 season.Under the plan, fans can purchase tickets for any six games except for Opening Day.
This season, India was named Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News as well as the National League's Outstanding Rookie in the MLB Players Choice Awards.
