Those gearing up to splash in Coney Island's Sunlite Water Adventure this weekend are going to have to wait a little longer. While the park was originally slated to open May 29, the season has been delayed 10 days because a water main in the pool area is leaking.

Coney had to "significantly" drain Sunlite Pool to access the leak and work to repair it. A press release says workers have been on the job since Tuesday, but it will take time to finish the fix and refill the pool.

“We are very disappointed that we will not able to open this week as originally expected, but we’re excited to welcome our guests back for an outstanding 2021 season as soon as possible,” Rob Schutter, president of Coney Island, says in the release.

The new Challenge Zone

The over-a-century-old park is home to the nation's largest recirculating pool (Sulite Pool), water slides, Cannonball Cove, Typhoon Tower Splashpark and paddle boats, but 2021 welcomes some new thrills to the mix, like the Challenge Zone, a 150-foot floating obstacle course and some interactive fun in the park's new Action Alley.

The Challenge Zone is slated to be "the largest Aquaglide pool obstacle course in the United States," a release from Coney Island says, and will feature obstacles including the Freefall Extreme, a 10-foot ladder climbing wall attached to a slide; King of the Mountain, a nearly 7-foot climbing wall/slide; the Monkey Dome, an over 10-foot tall dome with multiple routes; the I-Beam, a 10-foot long balance beam; and several other challenging hurdles.

Action Alley will boast activities such as Connect 4 Basketball, Jump Pad, a Gaga Pit, foam parties and plenty of arts and crafts.

Tickets purchased for dates between May 29 and when the park reopens will be honored for any public operating day this season. To purchase tickets, visit coneyislandpark.com.
