Dreaming of Dreamgirls

Broadway in Cincinnati offers a major shot of glam

In a summer season that’s pretty sparse on theater, Broadway in Cincinnati is giving us a major shot of glam starting on June 8 when Dreamgirls sashays into town. Maybe you saw the big-screen version in 2006 (Jennifer Hudson won an Academy Award as big-voiced Effie White), but Dreamgirls actually got its start on Broadway in 1981, and onstage is where its power can be best felt.

This thinly veiled re-telling of the saga of ecstasy and heartache of the real-life Supremes’ rise to Pop music stardom in the 1960s is a great piece of theater, and this production has glorious costumes by William Ivey Long, who won a fistful of Tonys for his work on shows like Nine, Crazy for You, The Producers, Hairspray and Grey Gardens. The touring production stopping at the Aronoff Center for several weeks (through June 20) has received strong reviews in cities across the U.S.

Tickets are $20.50-$69.50. Get show and theater details here.
