FotoFocus announced on Aug. 22 all 44 artists who will participate in the group exhibition AutoUpdate.

Held at The Carnegie in Covington, the show navigates digital technology's impact on photography and video in the current era of post-truth and artificial intelligence. The open call for submissions was put out in April of this year, seeking artists working "at the intersection of photography and new media in the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Tri-State area."

The show will open Sept. 14 and run through Nov. 16, with a reception on Oct. 4 from 5-8 p.m. At the reception at 7 p.m., Maggie Lawson, who served as Wave Pool's artist-in-residence earlier this year, will premiere a video performance, Go Home, that is described in a press release as a "performative lecture that works both as a problematic directive and a sacred pilgrimage through generations of the artists' chosen and anointed family."

Both events — the reception and exhibition — coincide with a day-long symposium on Oct. 5, AutoUpdate: Photography in the Electronic Age. Also delving into the post-truth, digitalized landscape, the symposium will feature panel discussions and conversations throughout the day navigating the nuances of the concept. In part, the theme is inspired by a 1994 edition of Aperture magazinewhich explored digital work and the possible uses and consequences of programs like Adobe Photoshop. A lot has changed since the mid-’90s — so think of this as, well, an update.

The keynote speaker, Trevor Paglen, was trained as both a geographer and photographer; his high-vantage photographs of public spaces related to this era of mass surveillance.
