FotoFocus, a local nonprofit photography and arts organization, has announced filmmaker, video artist and photographer Sky Hopinka as its next speaker for its Lecture and Visiting Artist series.
Hopinka will be speaking about his creative practice at the Cincinnati Art Museum on Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“Sky Hopinka pushes the boundaries of cinematic and multidisciplinary art forms through his melding of visual experimentation, sound, and language, weaving together personal and profound narratives,” FotoFocus executive director Katherine Ryckman Siegwarth said in a press release.
Hopinka is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation and Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians. His art captures the authentic histories of Indigenous peoples by using a cinematic approach combining abstract imagery and documentary film. Having been named a 2022 MacArthur Fellow and receiving Guggenheim, Sundance Art of Nonfiction and Forge Project fellowships, Hopinka is considered one of the century’s most significant artists.
He was also awarded the 2022 Infinity Award in Art from the International Center of Photography and the Alpert Award for Film/Video, among others. In 2020, Hopinka became an assistant professor of film at Bard College in New York, and The New York Times named a survey of his work at the college, called Centers of Somewhere, one of “the most important moments in art in 2020.” The New Yorker called his film, Lore, one of the best of 2020.
