Theater for kids is not a frequent topic in CityBeat, but I can't write about the recent passing of JERRY HANDORF without reflecting on the joy he brought to children for 24 years through MADCAP PRODUCTIONSPUPPET THEATRE. Handorf died July 7 awaiting a liver transplant; he was 45. With his enthusiasm for an art form that doesn't get much attention, Handorf nurtured Madcap from a small operation in 1981 to a nationally recognized touring company with an annual budget of more than $1 million. His specialty was giant puppets, some as tall as 18 feet, built in a shop on Glenway Avenue in Westwood. Early in his career Handorf worked with Jim Henson and his Muppet operation in New York City, but he returned to Cincinnati to start Madcap. Handorf had a wicked sense of humor: For Enjoy the Arts' 20 Days/20 Nights Festival, he created "Down & Dirty Tales," off-color renditions of fairytales, including "Snow White Trash." I suspect that Handorf is charming St. Peter with some big-ass puppets and a few sassy remarks. His energy will be missed. ...

The Know Theatre Tribe has rearranged its final 2005 production. Rather than a multiple-weekend run for two one-act plays, Sticks and Stones ...,

Know will present them only July 22-23 at 8 p.m. Added for the season-closer is Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers' MATT & BEN, a comedy imagining the pre-celebrity friendship of actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The fictional work envisions the script for Good Will Hunting dropping mysteriously from the sky and what ensues. Elizabeth Harris and Molly Binder playing the two; Harris recently performed Drinking Alone, a one-woman show presented by New Edgecliff Theatre (NET) that earned a CEA nomination for an alternative production; Binder is another CEA nominee for her work in NET's Wonder of the World. ...

If you'd like to meet local theater performers like Harris and Binder, stop by Arnold's Bar & Grill on Monday at 7 p.m. when the League of Cincinnati Theatres presents a MEET THE CEA NOMINEES event for all who are listed on the ballot on page 26 or online at
