A 2010 film featuring father-son acting duo Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez is making its way back to the theaters for a special, one-night only screening on Tuesday, May 16.

Several theaters across the Greater Cincinnati area will be taking part in the special screening of The Way, a story about an American father (Martin Sheen) who travels to Spain after his estranged son (Emilio Estevez) dies there while making a pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. The Camino de Santiago (or the Way of St. James) is a network of trails in France, Portugal and Spain that lead to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain. Tradition holds that the saint’s remains are buried there. It’s against this backdrop that Sheen’s character decides to take his own pilgrimage and face his feelings of faith, doubt, sorrow and joy.

“And just as the Camino pilgrimage itself has been followed for a millennium to reveal some deeper revelation in one’s life — THE WAY also carries a similar impact for all who have seen it. And yet still, there is a new generation who will embrace this film. They’ve heard about the Camino but may have never seen the movie, certainly not in a theater setting,” reads an event description.

In addition to the film, there will also be bonus footage featuring a lively discussion between Sheen, Estevez and travel writer and TV personality Rick Steves.

"On a recent Sunday in my hometown, I was immersed in another age-old Spanish tradition — the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. Two Hollywood icons, Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez, had approached me about filming bonus footage for the re-release of The Way The Movie, a story about traveling the Camino — and I was thrilled to join Martin and Emilio that weekend as a "guest pilgrim" in the new version of the film," Rick Steves said in the event description.

The three will tackle topics including faith, family and the importance of travel and pilgrimages.

The Way will be playing at the following local theaters:

  • CMX Cinébistro and CMX Liberty (7514 Bales St., Liberty Township) at 7 p.m.
  • Cinemark Milford 16 (500 Rivers Edge Drive, Milford) at 7 p.m.
