Starting Sunday, Oct. 3, embark on a leisurely locomotive sightseeing tour through the beautiful Hocking Hills region. The rides — on a train "made up of historic equipment ranging from 1917 to the 1960s" — happen Thursday through Sunday throughout October.
According to a release from the railway, trains depart the Nelsonville Depot at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and at 1 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays for a round trip to East Logan. Some train cars will be heated, depending on weather, but there are also open-air cars to take in the full fall feel.
The trip lasts about 2 hours, and tickets are $18 for adults, $13 for children and $16 for seniors and military.
Another event the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway hosts in October is the Starbrick BBQ & Brew Steam Express Trains. They say this train will be pulled by the 1920 Baldwin-built 0-6-0 steam locomotive, which sat unused for 60 years before the volunteers at Hocking Railway fixed it up. This is a 2-hour event scheduled for Oct. 29. Tickets start at $55.
The last event in October is naturally a Halloween celebration, the Trunk-or-Treat Train. The railway says the ride lasts about two hours round trip and crosses the spooky Hocking River Valley. Treats are available, and costumes are encouraged. The train departs the Nelsonville Depot at 6 p.m.
There is also an option later in the year for the Elegant Dinner Train, which, the railway says, is a 3-hour round trip through southeast Ohio backcountry. Each train will have a different dining theme with a four-course meal. The ride is scheduled for Nov. 20. Reservations will be available starting Oct. 18. Prices start at $75.
