The Volkshaus (The People’s House) in Over-The-Rhine has been established as the future location for a co-working space and community event center for the Cincinnati neighborhood.

In a release, OTR A.D.O.P.T. and Action Tank say they have partnered on this project, which they expect will be completed by the summer of 2023.

Organization officials say the first floor and outdoor area of 123 E. McMicken will be adapted into a space that can be used for events and community-organized gatherings.

They also say the main and second floors of the historic building will be used as a sliding scale co-working space for residents and community members. In addition, the second floor will be designated as a quiet office and conference room space with shelving for a resource library.

“The goal is to recapture the traditional conviviality of Over-the-Rhine in a space that cuts across lines of race and class,” OTR A.D.O.P.T. Executive Director Danny Klingler says in a release. “Think of it as Kaldi’s revival, with a social mission. Action Tank is the perfect partner to infuse this building with life."

“The Volkshaus, or The People’s House, will be a place where residents who feel disenfranchised may gather to reclaim their civic power and develop skills, strategies, and relationships to engage with local government systems and processes to benefit all residents, not just the lucky, well-connected few,” said Action Tank Executive Director Ioanna Paraskevopoulos.

The Volkshaus is being financed through nonprofit organizations, but project leaders are attempting to raise $10,000 to further offset costs. According to fundraising information, organizers will use the money to buy audio-visual equipment and stock the resource library, among other things. Donate to the Volkshaus.
