If you attended last spring's Cincinnati Fringe Festival, I hope you had a chance to catch the performance by BlueForms Theatre Group, In Pursuit of Happiness. The Columbus-based performance art group is returning to Cincinnati this weekend for two 8 p.m. performances at the home of the Know Theatre Tribe, Gabriel's Corner (1425 Sycamore St., Over-the-Rhine). They'll be presenting INVULNERABLE, an examination of political events and philosophy in post 9/11 America. Like their Fringe Festival work, InVulnerable brings inventive staging and passionate attitudes to a look at current events. Matt Slaybaugh, BlueForms' artistic director, says, "The events of Sept. 11 were used like any other political event as leverage for political agendas. Now that we have a bit of distance, it's possible to examine how we could've, should've, did and didn't respond to the most tragic day in recent American history — and how it's affecting the current political landscape." The performance presents scenes of abstract movement and rhetoric with monologues and scenes from the lives of three young people living in the area of the Twin Towers at the time of the attacks. Beechmont Players, a Cincinnati community theater group, is presenting an unusual show, THE CONFIDENCE MAN, a musical by Jim Steinman based on Herman Melville's 19th-century novel. The show got lost in the shuffle when Steinman decided to pursue his Rock & Roll songwriting career, touring with Meat Loaf (for whom he wrote "Bat Out of Hell"). Despite his successful Rock career, Steinman has held onto his musical theater connections, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, writing the lyrics for Whistle Down the Wind. James and Sarah Updike, who co-direct shows for Beechmont, are big Steinman fans (they maintain a Web site dedicated to him), and they're bringing back a show that's been gathering dust for 20 years. The Confidence Man is a blend of history and imagination set during the Civil War. The production — Friday and Saturday and Nov. 5-6 at Kreuger Auditorium at UC Clermont College — is a regional premiere. Info: www.beechmontplayers.com.
