1995, Not Rated

The Tick returns to face even wackier villains in this second collection from the cult cartoon classic. He continues to battle evil aided by sidekick Arthur and some very dry humor. Little Wooden Boy, an assembly of scrap wood, temporarily teams up with the deadpan duo. He turns up in the first episode of this particular season as the Swiss try to take over the U.S.A. Our big blue hero and his moth-man partner go on to grapple with the likes of The Ottoman Empress, who can animate furniture, and Blowhole, a giant whale, among others. Some favorite evil-doers from season one return including Chairface Chippendale, The Fin and El Seed. But there is one mystery The Tick can't unravel: Why was one episode, written by The Venture Bros co-creator Christopher McCulloch, left off this package, as in season one? "Alone Together," considered by many a Tick fan to be season two's most hilarious, got the axe. And there are no special features, which is odd for a show with such a devoted fan base. Yet for the casual fan and those who enjoy offbeat laughs bordering on the silly, this is a worthwhile investment. (P.F. Wilson) Grade: B
