Colerain Township's Germania Society Christkindlmarkt, one of Cincinnati's most beloved holiday traditions, was recently named one of the best christkindlmarkts in the country.

Digital travel magazine Trips to Discover rounded up 15 of America's best christkindlmarkts, which are based on German Christmas markets, with Cincinnati's "oldest and most authentic" making the list.

The Germania Society Christkindlmarkt was held Nov. 4-6 this year in Germania Park and featured a pavilion and heated tents filled with local vendors and imported goods.

"Held every winter since 1998, the family-friendly event is based on traditional Christmas markets popular in Germany. Sip on German bier and Glühwein, then get your Christmas shopping done early while shopping for unique gifts," the magazine writes.

The market also sells imported German items like nutcrackers, bier steins, cuckoo clocks, blown-glass ornaments, "schwibbogen" (candle arches) and pyramid candle holders with carousels.

The food at the christkindlmarkt is also a draw, notes the magazine, with offerings like mock turtle soup, traditional wursts and pastries.

"Fill up with homemade cabbage rolls and other savory German foods, then let the kids meet Santa," says Trips to Discover.

And this year, Krampus also made an appearance at the Germania Society Christkindlmarkt for photo ops and to spread the story of his role in German folklore.

In addition to visiting the christkindlmarkt, Trips to Discover says Cincinnati makes an excellent travel destination during November and December so tourists can see how we celebrate the holiday season.
