Starting in May, you’ll be able to view outfits sustainably created by dozens of regional artists in response to today’s culture of extraction and fast fashion.

The One Year, One Outfit project at Wave Pool will feature 23 outfits — three distinct garments or accessories — made by 34 artists from the Rust Belt Fibershed region (within 250 miles of Cleveland) using the “soil-to-soil” supply chain. This means fibers and dyes are grown, harvested and made into garments within a 250-mile radius, and at the end of their life cycle, garments can return to the soil.

The outfits are created by individual artists or collaborative teams in partnership with farmers, fiber guilds, community gardens and art studios. The project combines this slow fashion creation with skill- and tool-sharing, as well as a shared passion to use the region’s natural resources to craft sustainable, locally-made clothing.

“The project aims to create a paradigm shift that better relates to the Earth and our communities with care and is organized by the Rust Belt Fibershed as an invitation for us to question the origin of our clothes and explore local, slow fashion,” Wave Pool said in a press release.

In addition to the One Year, One Outfit exhibit, Wave Pool will also be hosting related workshops and a discussion:
