When an offbeat up-and-comer hits it big — be it a musician, actor or comedian — they can lose their edge. Sometimes stars sell out on their way to the top. So it’s nice to know that even though Zach Galifianakis is making that Hangover money, he’s still staying true to his weirdo roots.

The Between Two Ferns host created new comedy Baskets (Series Premiere, 10 p.m. Thursday, FX) with Louis C.K. (Louie) and Jonathan Krisel (Tim & Eric, Portlandia) — basically a trifecta of absurd comedy gold. Galifianakis stars as Chip Baskets, an aspiring professional clown. After failing to graduate from an elite Parisian clown school — due in part to his failure to grasp the French language — Baskets returns to Bakersfield, Calif., to work as a rodeo clown.

Baskets is joined by his Green-Card-wife Penelope, his fraternal twin brother Dale (also played by Galifianakis, in a role that harkens back to Zach’s “twin” Seth Galifianakis, made popular in his Live at the Purple Onion special) and his mother. Portrayed by Louie Anderson.
