Best Surprise Zoo Baby

A sad situation turned into a bit of tiny, unexpected joy at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden over the summer. Red panda Lin gave birth to a surprise new cub after miscarrying in May. Zoo scientists say it was the first documented case of a red panda miscarrying and having a cub in the same year. The new baby girl arrived in July 2021 and was named Shenmi — “Mimi” for short. This is not just a great surprise for zoo visitors who get to see an adorable red panda but is also amazing for the currently endangered species.
