Best Of 2023

The city isn’t turning a blind eye anymore to landlords who house tenants in dangerous conditions, officials say. In January, Cincinnati launched the first salvo of the year against bad building owners, filing a lawsuit against the Williamsburg of Cincinnati Apartments & Townhomes for a variety of alleged infractions, including lack of heat or water, flooding, mold, rodent infestations, faulty wiring, inoperable toilets and more. In official documents, the city said that the Williamsburg's owners haven't performed basic upkeep or responded to tenant complaints. The lawsuit also said that the Williamsburg is violating fire codes with inoperable hydrants, inadequate exit lighting, accumulated garbage and inadequate fire separation between units. Moreover, criminal activity at the apartments has increased, city officials said, thanks to inoperable security gates, inadequate outdoor lighting and overgrown vegetation. Officials followed up the lawsuit against the Williamsburg with filings against other negligent landlords.
