Long before the advent of viral TikTok roller skating videos, Cincinnati has been home to passionate skaters who have been keeping the community of eight wheels alive, and — in the Black community — fighting for their right to enjoy it.
In 1994, Tyra Patterson was arrested and ultimately incarcerated for murder and robbery — both crimes she did not commit. She was wrongly imprisoned for 23 years and released in 2017.
“Time Saved vs. Time Served" features five formerly incarcerated, returning citizens — each now deeply involved in social justice causes — including mural artistic director Tyra Patterson, who was in prison for 23 years for crimes she did not commit.
“We wanted to create more of a presence within the community, showing that people that look like me and my other co-founders — who are younger Black people — care about voting very much."
