Coming off what it considers a very successful performance of Leonard Bernstein's score to West Side Story as the movie was screened last weekend, the Cincinnati Pops announced it next will showcase composer John Williams' famous score to the first Star Wars movie, 1977's A New Hope, as the film is screening above the stage at Music Hall. The dates will be Sept. 7-9 and John Morris Russell will conduct.
For its opening concert of its 2018-19 season, last October in the newly renovated Music Hall, the Pops presented The Music of John Williams: Star Wars and Beyond, which featured, among others, themes from Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Schindler's List. Included from A New Hope were the "Cantina Band" scene and "Princess Leia's Theme."
Star Wars: A New Hope is one of those rare movies in which the music has become as famous and familiar as the visuals, which are pretty famous in their own right. Williams received an Academy Award for this film's score and has composed for subsequent Star Wars movies. Overall, he has won five Academy Awards and received a total of 51 Oscar nominations,
Concert times are 7 p.m. on Sept. 7 and 8; 2 p.m. on Sept. 9. Tickets start at $25 and go on sale at 10 a.m. May 4.
